Across tobacco regions — from Zimbabwe and Malawi to Vietnam and Indonesia — the walking tractor (two-wheel tractor, hand tractor) is the workhorse of smallholder and mid-size farms. But the tractor itself only turns wheels. What actually plants your tobacco, ridges your fields and recovers your mulch is the implement behind it. Choose the wrong set and you have an expensive tiller; choose the right set and one power unit runs your whole tobacco cycle.
Here is the implement set we recommend, in the order your fields need them.
1. Rotary Tiller — Land Preparation
The first job of the season: break and aerate the soil into a fine seedbed. A rotary tiller attachment does this in one or two passes.
- What to look for: tine count and rotor width matched to your tractor's horsepower; adjustable depth.
- Tobacco note: a fine, even seedbed matters more for tobacco than for maize — seedlings are transplanted by hand or machine into this bed.

2. Ridger — Ridge Forming
Tobacco is a ridge crop. Ridge height and width decide drainage, root development, and how well the transplanter and mulch layer perform afterwards.
- What to look for: adjustable ridge height and width — tobacco systems vary widely between regions; all-gear transmission, because ridge forming is heavy work and belt drives slip and wear in dusty fields.

3. Mulch Layer — Plastic Mulch Application

- What to look for: adjustable film width to match your ridges; the ability to lay drip irrigation line and spray in the same pass.

4. Inter-Row Cultivator / Hilling Machine — Crop Maintenance
Between transplanting and harvest, tobacco needs repeated weeding, soil loosening and earthing-up around the stems.
- What to look for: interchangeable tool heads (weeding, tilling, hilling) so one machine follows the crop stage; row-width adjustability so tines don't damage plants.

5. Film Remover — End-of-Season Recovery
After harvest, used mulch must come out. Left in the field, plastic fragments accumulate in the soil season after season — and hand removal takes worker-days per hectare.
- What to look for: mechanical (ideally electronic-control) film lifting that pulls the sheet out cleanly; dual-side hilling so soil work happens in the same pass.

6. The Transplanter — Often Self-Propelled, Not Tractor-Mounted
Here is a detail many first-time buyers miss: for tobacco, the most productive transplanters are usually self-propelled machines rather than walking-tractor attachments.
